CITES regional assessment for East Africa on Illegal take and trade of Sea Turtles

May 2018-Dec 2018

I've just completed 2 months of intensive fieldwork in Northern Mozambique and Madagascar interviewing artisanal fishers about their interactions with sea turtles. This work aims to assess the current levels of illegal take, domestic use, bycatch and export of sea turtles. This work is being done in collaboration with Dr Nick Pilcher and The Marine Research Foundation. We have prepared country-level reviews of illegal take and trade of turtles in Mozambique and Madagascar which are now undergoing an internal review with CITES ready for presentation at the next COP meeting.

Artisanal FIsheries Management Plan

Nov 2017 - April 2018

In collaboration with Centro Terra Viva, I had the opportunity to lead this project which used the FAO's ecosystem-based approach to fisheries (EAF) to guide the preparation of a fisheries management plan focused on artisanal fisheries occurring within the Ponta Do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve. What is exciting about this project is it's Mozambique's first artisanal fisheries management plan!

The management plan required the preparation of an extensive literature review and several stakeholder (fishers, government and others) consultation phases.

The plan has been completed and is waiting for approval for implementation through ANAC. The plan has been entitled: Extractive Resource Use Management Plan for the Western Shores of the Ponta do Ouro Marine Partial Reserve: 2018 – 2022.

It's supporting document:

Fisheries of Maputo Bay: Subsistence and Artisanal Fisheries in the Western Side of Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve. Baseline document to support an ecosystem-based approach for a marine and coastal resource use management plan for the western side of the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve.

This project was funded by the Peace Parks Foundation , for ANAC.
